Hello, here are ten songs that I listened to lately and enjoyed. Some of them come from my ongoing research for Drumming Upstream, others are from my ever in flux pile of “to listen to” releases. “Liar” by Brutus (Unison Life, 2022)

If you look Brutus up on Rate Your Music you’ll see them classified as a whole bunch of different genres that start with the prefix “post”. Ignore those four letters, all they’re trying to tell you is that this band loves a finely calibrated reverb. What matters is that they write kick ass rock songs. I have no idea how their drummer can project her voice with this much grit while drumming this hard. Great riff in the bridge.

“Until My Wings Turn to Ashes” by Jambinai (Apparition, 2022)

Now this on the other hand is post rock, but with a crucial twist. Before they get to their big, amplifier cranking climax, Jambinai build tension with a collection of traditional Korean instruments. The two sonic worlds blend so well together, especially the expressive lead during the loudest stretch, that you’d hardly think of them as being different worlds at all.
