Last week Bellows, an indie rock/pop/folk project that I play drums in, announced a new album called Next of Kin with two new tunes, titled “Rancher’s Pride” and “McNally Jackson”, each with their own music video.
The former’s video was directed by former Lamniformes Radio guest Felix Walworth who also performs music under the name Told Slant. It was shot upstate near Woodstock, which is also where I recorded drums for the tune last winter. This is one of my favorite Bellows songs to play on drums, it requires a fun mix of speed and dynamic control that feels very satisfying to pull together. If you’re into the folksier side of Bellow’s music this is the tune for you.
If you prefer your Bellows on the electronic and exuberantly poppy side, perhaps try “McNally Jackson”. I did not play drums on this one, but through the magic of movie making, I appear to in the music video. This one was shot by future Lamniformes Radio guest Daniel Ott, who flew out to NY back in September to hang out and make dope art. This music came out so great, damn we look like we’re having so much fun. Thanks Dan!
If you enjoy both sides of Bellows as evidenced by the two videos above then maybe you should do one of the following things:
See us live on November 23rd at Elsewhere with Office Culture and Crosslegged. This option is only realistically available to those in the New York area, although if you’re a big enough fan to read this and travel in from a far flung destination then clearly nothing I can say will stop you from doing anything. More power to you.
Pre-order Next of Kin from Top Shelf Records. Look at that gorgeous vinyl and charmingly unhinged album art! I played drums on a plurality of songs on this album and spent many weekends cooped up with Oliver, Jack and Frank lying on the studio couch and playing with Oliver’s dog Frankie while the other three mixed the record. That either means that I’m better qualified than anyone to know or interest-wise conflicted when I say that this is the best Bellows record and probably the best album I’ve worked on maybe ever? Only you can decide for yourself when you hear it.
Buy a t-shirt! Look how cool these look! One of them doesn’t even have the band name on it, so you can buy it even if you don’t want to be a walking billboard for another person’s art. You can just dig the design. No one will ever ask you to name three Bellows songs in public.
Well, if you’ve made it this far and have come to expect, as per Charles Dickens and the rule of three, information about the Lamniformes Radio guest of the present then buddy you are in luck! Joining me this week is puppeteer Preston Wollner, my oldest friend, former roommate, and the director of the recently debuted Morgus Bootoux’s Shadow Show, to which I supplied the music. Preston and I could, if not prevented by schedules and biological necessities, talk all day. This conversation only lasted two hours, but that was plenty of time for us to go in depth about Preston’s growth as an artist through a variety of mediums, our shared love of Nine Inch Nails, formative action figure experiences, and the process of making a shadow puppet play.
