Playlist Postscript: Best Songs of 2015
Selections from a 25 year-old music editor, reconsidered
Greetings from Los Angeles, California. I’m out west to celebrate my former editor, former podcast co-host, and good friend Josh’s wedding. By the time you read this I will be back in the icy plains of Chicago, where Josh and I first became friends. Josh is also one of this newsletter’s most dedicated paying subscribers, which brings us to the subject of today’s letter.
Today we continue our march forward in time and consider the merits of the Best Songs of 2015 as selected by my 25 year-old self. In 2015 I was starting to lose the plot a little bit. I played drums in a ska band. I got dumped. It was my first full year as a heavy metal blogger for Invisible Oranges. I quit drinking after an especially bad night that summer. I recorded an EP with Lamniformes that I still have conflicted feelings about. I got a promotion at my day job and started editing at Unrecorded. I became a fan of NBA basketball generally, and the Chicago Bulls specifically. Derrick Rose’s game winning three against the Cleveland Cavaliers in the second round of the 2015 playoffs is still the high-mark of my Bulls fandom. Weird year for me, but how was it for music? Scroll below to find out! The songs that hold up the best will receive the coveted Lamniformes Shark Emoji of Approval (🦈). Since we listened to this playlist together on the drive to Michigan for Thanksgiving, ~*My Girlfriend*~ also awarded her favorites with the Cherry Blossom Emoji of Excellence (🌸). Obie the dog chimed in to give one song the Dog Emoji of Distaste (🐶).
