Playlist Postscript: Brewer Metal 101
The "definitive" playlist for a fake genre
Welcome back to Playlist Postscript. Every month I revisit an old playlist of mine and provide my present day thoughts on my past selections. For the second half of 2025 I’ve focused on playlists of heavy music assembled at the request of friends and bandmates. So far this mini-series has covered playlists summarizing the history of metal, or focused on a single 10 year chunk of that history. Today’s playlist narrows that focus even further to a single sub genre of dubious legitimacy. In honor of this newsletter’s five year anniversary, this month playlist returns to the subject that put Lamniformes Cunieform on the margins of the map: Brewer Metal. As always I must credit Ben of Trauma Angel and Patrick Lyons of Inbox Infinity for providing the prompt and name for this micro-genre spinoff from the sludge and stoner metal scenes of the American south. Consider this playlist the unofficial soundtrack to that half a decade old meme explainer, granting us the occasion to refine the definition of the term with real musical examples. As always the songs that hold up best under the harsh light of the present will be marked with The Lamniformes Shark Emoji of Approval (🦈), while songs that will eventually factor into Drumming Upstream will bear The Drum Emoji of Destiny (🥁).
Playlist Postscript is exclusive to my paying subscribers. To access this series and other illusive bonuses, consider subscribing for $5 a month or $40 a year. A number of you may notice that you access to this post despite not forfeiting any cash. As part of my five year anniversary celebration I decided to gift a free year of paid subscriptions a number of my most dedicated readers. Consider it a “Day Ones Special”. I hope you enjoy the extra writing, and that you’ll consider signing on for on-going subscription even after the year ends. If not, that’s chill too! Thank you for your support, and enjoy the tunes below.
