Earliest crowdfunded record I am aware of is Einstürzende Neubauten's Supporter Album #1, which I remember backing right when I was laid off from a job in the summer of 2002.
They just had their own custom-built site to manage it. You paid for it and got access to the forum, where they posted behind the scenes stuff, work in progress things, stuff like that. When they were ready, they went into the studio, asked for mailing addresses, and sent everything out. All very DIY. very hands-on, but it worked. They did three rounds of it, as I remember, with a bunch of recorded material coming out of it all.

Oh interesting! How did they organize the crowdfunding back then? That's gotta be nearly a decade before Kickstarter etc.
